What is Lapiplasty surgery?
Lapiplasty is an advanced, minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to correct bunions at their root cause. Unlike traditional approaches that simply shave down the bony bump, Lapiplasty realigns the entire metatarsal bone in a three-dimensional correction, addressing the instability that led to the bunion in the first place.
This technique provides a more stable, long-lasting solution and helps prevent the bunion from returning – all with smaller incisions and less disruption to surrounding tissues.
How is this different from traditional bunion surgery?
Traditional bunion surgery, also known as an osteotomy, involves cutting and shifting the bone to reduce the visible bump. However, this method does not correct the underlying instability in the foot, which is why bunions can often come back.
Lapiplasty, on the other hand, uses specialized instrumentation to realign the bone in all three dimensions and secures it with titanium plates. The minimally invasive approach means less tissue trauma, reduced post-op pain, and a faster recovery compared to traditional techniques.
Volunteer Podiatry is one of only a few institutions that offer this treatment in Knoxville.
What is the recovery time for lapiplasty?
Recovery time varies by patient, but most patients can begin to bear weight in a walking boot within days to a couple of weeks after surgery – significantly faster than traditional bunion procedures.
Full recovery, including a return to normal shoes and activities, generally takes about 4 to 6 months, with physical therapy recommended to aid mobility and strength.
How do you to prepare for Lapiplasty?
Preparation for Lapiplasty is similar to other surgical procedures.
Your podiatrist will assess your overall health and may order imaging tests to plan the surgery. You may need to stop certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure. On the day of surgery, follow fasting guidelines and arrange for someone to drive you home. Your doctor will provide detailed post-op care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
